We secretly get excited that we are eating a product with “Contains Omega-3’s!” advertised on the label because we know we are doing our bodies a big favor. But what exactly is the purpose of consuming Omega 3’s? Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids, meaning our bodies cannot make them so they must be provided by our diet. There are three types: EPA, DHA, and ALA. EPA and DHA can mainly be found in sources of fish. ALA can be found in flax seed, walnuts, and various nut oils. Omega-3’s play a critical role in brain function, and some studies show they may even help reduce depression. They have also been shown to lower elevated triglyceride levels (which when high can be a risk factor for heart disease), aid in proper growth and development in infants, and act as an anti-inflammatory. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines and albacore tuna) at least two times a week.  So now you know why Omega 3 is the way to go!
